Viral research and diagnostic lab set up at Theni Medical College

A viral research and diagnostic laboratory was inaugurated at the Department of Microbiology at Theni Government Medical College in Gandamanur Pass near here on Monday. A de-addiction centre was also inaugurated.

The lab would function as a referral centre for diagnosis of viral infections in Theni, Dindigul and Karur districts. It would facilitate rapid diagnosis of viral fevers such as dengu, chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis, influenza such as swine flu and bird flu, and other viral infections to provide appropriate treatment to poor people, said Dean K. Kathirkamu.

The lab was set up at a cost of Rs. 2 crore, contributed by Indian Council of Medical Research, New Delhi, and the State government, he added.

Head of the Department of Microbiology K.M. Mythreyee said that the lab was equipped to test 200 blood samples at a time. It was also equipped to handle more samples to meet the demand in the coming years.

Doctors and lab staff were well-trained to handle the advanced equipment. Facilities like freezer and uninterrupted power supply were also provided.

Precautionary measures had been taken to protect the health of the lab staff. Facilities in the lab would also help undertake research in identifying emerging and new genetically active agents, she added.

The de-addiction centre was established at a cost of Rs. 1 crore. Later, the Dean briefed Theni MP R. Parthiban, faculty members and staff about the facilities available in the lab.

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa inaugurated the lab through video- conferencing on Monday. She also inaugurated a primary health centre at Kanakkapatti in Vedasandur block in Dindigul.
