MDMK general secretary Vaiko, Dravidar Kazhagam president K. Veeramani and veteran CPI leader C. Mahendran were among those who visited former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi at Kauvery Hospital here on Wednesday.

Actors Ajith Kumar, Vijay and Goundamani visited the ailing DMK president.

“I wish to see Kalaignar return to lead us because we need him in the prevailing political climate. I also wish he will come back so that he can witness [DMK working president] Stalin ascend to the position he always wanted him to [hold],” MDMK leader Vaiko told journalists after meeting Mr. Stalin inside the hospital.

He said the ‘alertness’ shown by Mr. Karunanidhi during Congress president Rahul Gandhi's visit to the hospital on Tuesday was an indication of his well-being.

The scene outside Kauvery Hospital in the morning was calm. The deployed police officers and the traffic police had cleared the road and shifted barricades to the side. They made way for regular traffic movement.

DMK leader A. Raja arrived first and later the party's working president M.K.Stalin and his son Udhayanidhi came.

Mr. Karunanidhi's daughter and Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi also arrived later. The crowd waiting outside swelled up when they heard actor Vijay was heading to visit the leader.

Many of the party supporters have been stationed outside the hospital ever since Mr. Karunanidhi was admitted in the ICU. People from Mannargudi, Thiruvarur, Trichy and even Dubai are among the crowd.
