Villages inundated along Cauvery, Coleroon

Several villages along the Cauvery and the Coleroon in the delta districts of Tiruchi, Karur, Nagapattinam and Thanjavur were marooned by floodwaters on Saturday.

The overflow of water from the Cauvery at Kilikudu, upstream of the Grand Anicut, had submerged banana plantations in around 400 acres.

The realisation of water in the Cauvery at Mayanur rose to 2.28 lakh cusecs on Saturday morning — It was 2,24,600 cusecs at Mukkombu (Upper Anicut).

A few residential localities, including Linga Nagar near Woraiyur in Tiruchi, were inundated. Inundation was also reported in Thavittupalayam and Thirumukkudal — the confluence point of Amaravathi, Cauvery and Bhavani Sagar rivers — and Achamapuram in Karur district.

In Nagapattinam district, around 800 houses in villages situated along the banks of the Coleroon were inundated, and nearly 2,000 people were shifted to relief camps.

In Thanjavur, as many as 235 persons had been accommodated in temporary shelters following the inundation of residential areas.

Flood alert

The district administration in Cuddalore on Saturday sounded a flood alert for villages downstream of the Lower Anicut as more than 2 lakh cusecs of water was being released into Kollidam river.

Around 4,000 cusecs was released for irrigation.
