Angered over the death of a farmer in an accident near Karamandurai on Sunday evening, villagers set on fire a private bus which was involved in the accident. The deceased was identified as A. Illayaraja (35) from Kovilakkadu, near Vazhapadi, here.

According to the police, the farmer while returning to Kovilakkadu from Karamandurai on a two-wheeler was said to have been hit by a private bus coming from Salem near Pakudupatti Pirivu Road in Belur. Illayaraja died of injuries. Police said that on coming to know of the incident, Illayaraja’s family members and other villagers attacked the bus and a few villagers burnt the bus.

None of the passengers were injured in the incident. Senior police officials visited the spot and reviewed the situation. Police personnel were also posted in the area. Illayaraja’s body was sent to a hospital in Attur for post-mortem. Karamandurai police have registered a case and the bus driver Venkatachalam (32) was arrested. Police said that a case will be registered against the villagers for burning the bus, if the bus owner files a complaint.
