Hundreds of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) cadre, led by their leader Vijayakant, were arrested when they tried to stage a black-flag demonstration against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over Mullaperiyar Dam in Chennai on Monday.
Clad in black shirts, Mr. Vijayakant, eight party MLAs and party cadre assembled near the Panagal building in Saidapet to launch the protest. As they proceeded towards the Raj Bhavan, the police arrested them. They were kept in a marriage hall and were released in the afternoon. Later talking to reporters, Mr. Vijayakant accused the Centre of betraying Tamil Nadu on the dam issue and Cauvery Water Dispute.

In Karaikudi, hundreds of members of various political parties were detained after they staged black flag protest against Prime Minister.
Members belonging to MDMK, DMDK, CPI and Manitha Neya Makkal Katchi raised slogans against the Centre for its failure to protect the interests of Tamils in the Mullaperiyar Dam issue.
