‘There is not even an iota of truth behind media reports’

Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) leader G.K. Vasan, who met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Wednesday, described reports that he will merge his party with the BJP as “double distilled lies”.

“There is not even an iota of truth in those reports. The TMC has completed five years and we have experienced ups and downs. We are not able to make a mark in the Lok Sabha and Assembly polls. We have a long way to go,” Mr. Vasan told The Hindu over the phone after meeting Mr. Modi.

Mr. Vasan said the TMC would contest the next local body polls as part of the AIADMK alliance in Tamil Nadu and would make an entry in the Legislative Assembly in 2021.

“We are concentrating on strengthening the organisation at all levels and evolving strategy with senior leaders,” he said.

Asked whether there was space for the TMC in State politics since the political arena was already overcrowded, Mr. Vasan said if political parties took this argument seriously, they will have to merge themselves with one national party.

“Hope is the factor that drives political parties to run their organisation,” he said, adding the question about whether Mr. Modi had invited him to join the BJP was ‘unnecessary’.

Mr. Vasan said he met Mr. Modi since he did not want to delay the meeting, especially after the Prime Minister, during his visit to Mamallapuram, had asked him to come to Delhi.

“I had not met him since the Lok Sabha polls. Since he was busy with his foreign tours I could not meet him earlier,” he said.
