Vasan hints at keeping options open for alliances

May 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - RAMANATHAPURAM:

Asserting that Tamil Manila Congress (TMC) was not in a hurry to capture power in the State, its president G. K. Vasan has indicated that the party would keep its options open in forging alliances, considering the overall interests of the people.

Talking to reporters here on Friday, Mr. Vasan parried questions on electoral strategies but dropped enough hints that the party would keep its options wide open. “The party will be part of a secular front and take a stand that will protect the interests of the people of the State,” he said adding that the TMC wanted to gain people’s confidence before the elections.

Replying to a question, he said “we are not after power” and the party was floated to protect the interests of people, Mr. Vasan said the TMC would emerge as a major force to reckon with ahead of the Assembly elections. After launching the membership drive in December, the party had enrolled 45 lakh members till March end.

After announcing the office-bearers for all district units by the end of this month, he would undertake Assembly segment-wise tour from the first week of June. The party would draw the electoral strategies based on its strength and the prevailing situation, he added. While taking its stand on the alliance issue, it would accord top priority to the interests of the State, he added.

He said the State should be more assertive on Andhra Pradesh police gunning down 20 woodcutters in the Seshachalam forest area and take all steps to ensure that the culprits were brought to book at the earliest.
