Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko has said he will participate in a rail roko in Thanjavur on November 22 against the construction of dams across the Cauvery at Mekedatu.

In a release, he said a group of farmers from the delta region met him to discuss the issue on Sunday. “The river benefits 12 districts, and three crore farmers depend on it. At a time when the livelihood of 75 per cent of the Tamils depends on the river, the Karnataka government has announced that dams would be built in two places. All political parties, traders and the people of Tamil Nadu must prevent this move,” he said.

He appealed to traders’ associations to ensure the success of the protest.
