The 11 Uzhavar Sandhais in Salem district created a record of sort by crossing Rs. 70 lakh sales turnover on Friday.
About 1,200 farmers had brought 271 tonne vegetables to the Sandhais on Friday and they fetched a sale of Rs. 70.3 lakh, according to sources.
As usual Suramangalam Santhai registered a sale of Rs. 23.50 lakh yesterday (267 farmers and 76 tonnes of vegetables), followed by Thathagapatti which managed a sale of vegetables of Rs. 10.89 lakh (242 farmers and 43 tonnes vegetables); Ammapettai Sandhai Rs. 5.20 lakh (112 farmers and 20 tonne vegetables); Hasthampatti sandhai Rs. 3.5 lakh (73 farmers and 15 tonne vegetables). Banana, plantain leaves, brinjal, lady's finger, flowers, ash gourd, etc., were in heavy demand in connection with the ‘Maattu Pongal’.
