The Principal District and Sessions Court on Wednesday granted unconditional bail to O. Raja, Periyakulam Municipal Chairman and brother of PWD Minister O. Panneerselvam, in connection with a ‘pujari’ S. Nagamuthu suicide case.
Mr. Raja, one of the prime accused in the suicide case, surrendered before the district court seeking bail in this connection as per the direction of the Madras High Court Bench in Madurai.
On hearing the bail petition, Principal District Judge V. Sivagnanam granted bail and advised Mr. Raja to appear before Periyakulam Judicial Magistrate Court on June 26 for further hearing. The lower court, which was hearing the case, would decide whether to shift it to a higher court or not.
Earlier, Special Public Prosecutor A. Vellaisamy objected to granting bail and appealed to the court not to grant bail to him.
Dhandapani, lawyer of Nagamuthu’s father Subbu Raj, too argued that bail should not be given.
Later, Mr. Dhandapani said that he would challenge the bail that was granted to Mr. Raja in the Madurai Bench. Mr. Raja had already obtained anticipatory bail for this case. When he sought bail under PCR Act, the Bench directed him to approach the district court for relief.
The case relates to the suicide of a ‘pujari’ S. Nagamuthu
