Two patients, who were suffering from orthopaedic complications following fracture in the hip, have undergone free surgeries under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme at Tuticorin Medical College Hospital.
As Mary (53) of Governagiri near Ottapidaaram and Madasamy (75) of Jakkammalpuram in the district suffered hip fractures and osteoarthritis, they underwent total hip replacement surgeries on a single day recently.
“This is the first time in the history of TMCH to perform back to back total hip replacement surgeries on a day,” said orthopaedic surgeon L. Paavalan.
The TMCH has performed so far 85 hip replacement surgeries, Dean P. Shanthakumar said.
“The patients would have to spend Rs. 1.50 lakh to Rs. 2 lakh if the procedure had been done in a private hospital,” he said.
