Two more pre-paid auto fare counters for Tuticorin

January 08, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:52 am IST - TUTICORIN:

Two more pre-paid auto fare counters will be introduced soon at Tuticorin old and new bus stands as there was a good response from the public for the pre-paid auto fare system launched recently at Tuticorin railway station.

Initially, the rail passengers availed 37 auto-rickshaws after the new regulation came to effect. On the subsequent day, it increased to 57 autos, according to Tuticorin Regional Transport Officer, K. Anand.

Motor Vehicle Inspectors from Kovilpatti and Tiruchendur would be involved in checking autos, where-in fixation of revised fare structure cards was made mandatory. If any auto driver was found violating this new regulation, the vehicle would be seized by the transport authorities, immediately, he told The Hindu here on Wednesday.

26 autos seized

Twenty-six auto-rickshaws were seized in a crackdown launched by transport authorities here on Wednesday. The seizure was made after these auto drivers had failed to comply with new regulations of revised auto fare system and found violating several norms under the Motor Vehicle Act, Mr. Anand, who led the enforcement drive, told The Hindu .

The drive was launched as per the directive from Collector M. Ravikumar. He said that some of the erring drivers were non-cooperative under the pre-paid auto fare system. The authorities checked the auto-rickshaws, in which the revised auto fare structure cards were not displayed by the drivers, the RTO said. Penalty would be imposed on them, he added.
