After intrusion by three wild elephants on Monday night, the Forest Department has stepped up its operation to drive wild elephants by deploying its kumkis Bomman and Vijay at Varapalayam near Pannimadai on Tuesday.

The Forest Department on Tuesday deployed two more kumkis Bomman and Vijay to help mitigate human-animal conflict in Pannimadai area.

It may be recalled that two wild elephants Vinayakan and Chinnathambi damaged properties and crops at Chinnathdagam, Varapalayam, Ponnuthamman koil and Somayanur areas. The department immediately brought two kumki elephants John and Cheran from the camp at Chadivayal.

The department also brought Bomman and Vijay, but chose to station them at Chadivayal camp till the ground situation is prepared to chase the wild elephants back into the forest.

Meanwhile, on Monday night three wild elephants entered human habitations. This resulted in panic among the public going up. Residents of the area and forest officials entered into arguments on Tuesday, with the former asking the latter to find out a permanent solution by capturing the elephants and refused to accept any ad-hoc solutions.

The officials explained the protocols and assured to find out a solution. However, to step up the efforts to chase the wild elephants back into the forest, the Forest Department on Tuesday evening deployed Bomman and Vijay to prevent the wild elephants from straying further into the human habitations.
