Two independents filed their nomination papers for the by-elections to the Tiruvarur Assembly constituency on Thursday.

N. Agni Sriramachandran of Nagamaraipudur in Dharmapuri district and K. Padmarajan of Mettur in Salem district filed their nominations before S. Murugadoss, Revenue Divisional Officer and Returning Officer.

Mr. Padmarajan, whose name figures in the Limca Book of Records for being the ‘most unsuccessful candidate,’ in the electoral history of the country, has been contesting every other election since the late 1980s, including presidential and vice-presidential elections.

Bypoll to the constituency, necessitated by the demise of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi will be held on January 28.

CPI(M) support

The CPI (M) State Secretariat has decided to extend support to the DMK in the Tiruvarur bypoll. In a statement, CPI (M) State secretary K. Balakrishnan accused the ruling AIADMK government of acting as a proxy of the BJP government and compromising on State autonomy.
