Two female elephants were killed in the Setteri dam area near the Vellore-Krishnagiri border after they came into contact with an illegally electrified fence around a coconut grove in the early hours on Wednesday.

The siblings, aged one year and nine years, were wandering in the area along with their mother. Forest Department officials attached to Tirupattur range said the younger elephant was electrocuted first. Its sister tried to save it and was also electrocuted.

“The incident occurred at 4 a.m. in the Setteri Dam area, which is 25 metres away from Vellore border in Krishnagiri district. The land measuring about one to two acres belongs to Abdullah (67) of Vaniyambadi. He had given it to Subburaj (35) to take up agriculture. Subburaj had illegally electrified the fence,” said M. Mohammed Rafi, assistant conservator of forests, Tirupattur division. Officials said the fence might have been electrified to hunt stray deer and wild boars. There were coconut trees in the land.

The mother elephant had moved away from the spot following the electrocution and tried to chase a few villagers.Officials of the Forest Department in Hosur and Krishnagiri rushed to the spot and conducted a post-mortem.
