Two chain snatchers arrested; 29 sovereigns of gold recovered

Two persons involved in chain snatching were arrested near Nagercoil on Monday and 29 sovereigns of gold jewels that were snatched from women at various places in the district were recovered from them.

Superintendent of Police Manivannan said that a special team was formed under the Nesamony Nagar Sub Inspector Vijayan to crack chain snatching incidents.

The special team rounded up a suspect near the children’s park in Ponnappa Nadar Nagar area. Enquiries revealed that he was Madhan (24) of Madhavalayam. He had snatched a chain from a woman near Women’s Christian College in Nagercoil and a 12.5-sovereign chain from a woman in Vathiyarvilai.

Another special team headed by Suchindram Inspector Rajapaul and Special Branch SI Samson Jebadoss arrested Jayakumar (34) of Kanimadam area near Vattakottai during regular patrolling.

Jayakumar was a habitual offender. He used to escape to Mumbai after committing an offence. He had stolen 15 sovereigns from a locked jewellery shop in Kani Madam. He was involved in various theft cases in Mumbai.

A total of 16.5 sovereigns of gold ornaments were recovered from Jayakumar.
