Even as the nation-wide strike against Road Safety and Transport Bill did not affect the common man, movement of goods was paralysed here on Thursday as a majority of lorry operators struck work.
However, autos, and private and government buses were operated as usual.
About 1,500 lorries with national permit and 2,500 local lorries were off the road in support of the nation-wide strike.
About 5,000 workers, who are engaged in logistics business, directly and indirectly, were affected owing to the strike.
Goods worth Rs. 20 crore stagnated in the city owing to the strike, according to sources in the Lorry Owners’ Association.
Private bus drivers wore black badges to show their protest and drove the buses to various destinations from Dindigul.
Theni
Routine life was not affected much in Theni district owing to the truck operator’ strike.
Buses and autos were plying as usual.
Five hundred of the 750 lorries in the district were off the road.
Goods were not sent to Kerala from Theni district.
However, essential commodities such as milk, meat and vegetables were transported to Kerala before 6 a.m.
