Trekking schoolchildren stung by bees

Over 50 schoolchildren were injured after honey bees stung them while they were trekking to Gudiyam Cave on Wednesday morning.

According to forest officers, a private trust took schoolchildren on a trek to Pulikandram forest area spread over 2,000 hectares near Gudiyam Cave. “Trekking is banned here, but the organiser Velayudham took the children there,” said a forest officer.

When they were trekking, someone stirred the honey bee nest and the bees started attacking them. “Six persons were injured and became immobile. The remaining were rushed to Gudiyam village and assembled there,” added the officer.

Mr. Velayudham also sustained injuries and has been admitted to the hospital “We will take him under custody tomorrow,” added the officer.
