Work at treasury offices in the district came to a grinding halt on Tuesday as almost all the employees went on casual leave demanding action against Munianathan, Director of Treasuries and Accounts, for harassing officers and the staff.

The strike was total in the district as 145 of the 149 employees went on leave, S. Murugesan, State secretary of Tamil Nadu Treasuries and Accounts Service Association, said.

Except in Mandapam, all the six sub-treasury offices in the taluks remained closed. The employees locked the offices and handed over the keys to the respective Assistant Treasury Officers (ATOs). The sub-treasury office in Mandapam was open but only the ATO was present, he said.

In Ramanathapuram, only the Treasury Officer and an ATO in-charge of the strongroom were present and no transaction took place, Mr. Murugesan said.

The one-day strike by the employees received overwhelming response, he also said.

The association would step up its agitation if the government failed to initiate action against Mr. Munianathan and paid adequate compensation to the family of Murthy, Additional Treasury Officer, Madurai, who collapsed and died while being questioned by the IAS officer during a review meeting in Chennai last week.

The Director indiscriminately transferred officers and employees to harass them and pressurised the officers to collect the extra payment made to the pensioners. The day’s strike affected payments to government departments, sale of stamp papers and challan payment in banks, he said.

Sivaganga

The strike evoked partial response in Sivaganga district with about 50 per cent of the staff turning up for duty. All the seven sub-treasury offices remained open though work was affected. More than 70 per cent of the staff abstained from work at the District Treasury Office, sources said.

Dindigul

The District Treasury in Dindigul wore a deserted look and financial transactions were completely paralysed.

Workload for the employees was very high, and they pressed for action against the Director of Treasuries and Accounts, who increased their workload manyfold, said District Treasury Employees’ Association district secretary Stephen Manohar.
