Speaker refuses to allow debate on issue

DMK legislators, led by Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin, walked out of the Assembly on Wednesday, after the Speaker refused to allow a debate on the transfer of an official involved in the probe into the gutkha scam.

IAS officer V.K. Jeyakodi, who was appointed Vigilance Commissioner a few months ago following a Madras High Court order to monitor the probe into the multi-crore scam, was transferred on Tuesday.

When Mr. Stalin sought to raise the issue in the House, the Chair refused to allow a debate on it, citing a related case that was pending in the Madras High Court. Even as DMK legislators were on their feet, demanding a debate on the issue, the Speaker stood his ground, maintaining that the officer could have been transferred for ‘administrative’ purposes.
