Pollachi-Palghat section could not be thrown open for train traffic immediately due to the local body elections in Kerala, said Sunil Kumar Garg, Divisional Railway Manager (Madurai), here on Wednesday.

Addressing newsmen at Dindigul railway junction, Mr. Garg said that the railway administration had written to the Kerala State Election Commissioner stating that the section was ready for inspection. Train services would commence if there was a favourable nod from the State Election Commissioner, he said.

The local body elections in Kerala would be conducted in two phases from November 2. Referring to the ongoing track doubling work between Dindigul and Villupuram, Mr. Garg said that when the second track was thrown open for traffic in early 2016 journey time between Madurai and Chennai would come down by an hour.

The DRM was here to inspect track doubling work between Dindigul and Tiruchi.

At Vadamadurai, residents submitted a petition to Mr. Garg with an appeal not to downgrade the local railway station as a stoppage.
