Traffic snarls are a perennial problem in the city due to poor traffic management system in place. However, on Sunday noon, the half-a-km stretch on Meyyanur Main Road from New Bus Stand got chocked as vehicles could hardly move in the stretch.
With the corporation issuing no-objection certificates to the commercial establishments that have no parking space on their premises, their customers’ park vehicles haphazardly on the arterial road. Presence of cine complex, commercial establishments on both the sides of the roads and encroachment of road space by the shops have thrown traffic out of gear.
The inauguration of a new mobile shop in the area and customers lining up to grab the offers resulted in congestion.
Later, other mobile shops in the area started to sell products with offers resulting in more two-wheelers parked on the road.
Traffic came to a standstill after film-goers started to leave the theatres around 2 p.m.
Motorists said that action should be taken against the shops and establishments for allowing their customers to park vehicles on road. “Two-third of the road is encroached upon by the vehicles. Why should road users suffer?,” questioned M. Vinod, a motorist. The absence of traffic police personnel also worsened the situation as congestion prevailed throughout the day.
Road users also wanted action against the corporation officials for failing to check encroachments in the busy stretch.
Last week, traffic near New Bus Stand area came to a standstill when people thronged in large numbers to have glimpse of a film artist who came for inauguration of a showroom. As normalcy in traffic could not be restored, police resorted to lathicharge and later the showroom was also closed.
