A team of students from the Mailam Engineering College, Villupuram, have developed an application, ‘Train Location Detector,’ to track the position of trains.
Arun Prasath, Thangaraj, Bala Murugan and Sadeesh who are final year Electronics and Communication Engineering students have designed an Android app using a Raspberry Pi (a low cost, credit-card sized computer which enables people to explore computing) device which is equipped with GPS, GPRS, GSM and battery. The device, when affixed to a train, transmits information about the position of the train using GPS and GPRS to a server which disseminates this to phone users through Google maps. According to a press release issued by the college, the students have said that the app is a great boon for commuters to know the exact position of the train and save time.
Passengers will be informed if the train is delayed due to reasons like signal congestion, inclement weather and maintenance issues, it said.
Project head Rajaparthiban said the device can be of help during natural disasters and accidents to rescue teams and relatives of victims. College Principal S. Senthil said the device could be used for heavy vehicles and ships, ‘creating a new dimension in the world of logistics,’ said the release.
The college management appreciated the efforts of the team behind the initiative.
First batch comes up in flying colours

The release added that the institute had a successful campus placement. This includes 20 students who were recruited by CARE IT solution, and nine students from the Department of Computer Science who were recruited by RMP Infotech, according to information available on the institute’s website.
Placement fete
Students, parents and teachers of the CK College of Engineering and Technology, Cuddalore, attended the Job Offer Day programme on the college premises on June 7, where 308 students received their offer letters. College Director D. Chandrasekaran wished the students success, and hoped they would become good entrepreneurs in the future.
