Elephant Pongal was celebrated with considerable enthusiasm at the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) near here on Friday. It attracted good number tourists.
As many as 13 camp elephants at Theppakadu, seven at Abhayaranyam and six at Bambax which were now part of a Rejuvenation camp participated in the celebrations.
A few of them performed puja at the local temple.
The Deputy Director, MTR, D. Chandran, served Pongal to the elephants and the visitors.
Interacting with them he explained the significance of the occasion.
Some of the tourists said that they were lucky to celebrate Pongal at one of the best known wildlife reserves in the country.
The abnormally warm weather (by local standards) during the day and the bitter chillness after dusk notwithstanding a large number of tourists including a good number of foreigners flocked to scenic spots.
Under the aegis of the district DMK ‘Samathuva Pongal’ was celebrated in various parts of the district including Gudalur.
