Tiruchi district has a very few tourism spots such Mukkombu, Puliyancholai and Pachamalai. Puliyancholai is located at the foot of Kolli Hills and is blessed with a river known for unpolluted water. A few cottages built and managed by the panchayat are not maintained properly. In coordination with the panchayat and the Forest Department, the Tourism Department can develop the area for the benefit of tourists.

Dangerous to eat

Parotta shops are visible in every nook and corner of the city and have outnumbered the customary idli shops. Use of chemicals to whiten and soften the atta is dangerous to health. Food Safety officials should take stringent action against such practice.

Vehicle check

Transport authorities checked school/ college buses and vans recently. Many schools do not own the required number of vehicles forcing a sizable number of students to depend on private vehicles. Some private vehicles are not only badly maintained they also carry more students than the stipulated capacity. These vehicles should be subjected to a thorough check by the authorities concerned.

A welcome move

The high court’s ruling on helmets for two-wheeler riders from July 1 should be welcomed. The Anna University’s Bharathidasan Institute of Technology has put up a notice stating that the helmets are mandatory for two-wheeler riders entering its campus. This is a welcome move as it would sensitise people on safety.

Saravanan Natesan,

Puthanampatti

Making helmets mandatory from July 1 by the high court is positive. The high court should ask the government to make it mandatory to provide helmets while purchase of new vehicles.

Dangerous

ingredients

Every body relishes ice creams. But people should beware of the artificial agents and sweeteners used by some manufacturers. Colouring agents could cause health problems.

New tatkal rules

Change of booking time for Tatkal tickets is a welcome move. All the passengers logging in at the same time for booking leads to server hang problem. The proposal for privatising maintenance of railway coach will improve quality of service.

Plant saplings

With the widening of roads for the making them four-lanes, the road stretching from Mannarpuram to K.K. Nagar has lost its green cover. I would request the corporation authorities to plant neem saplings as well as saplings of other fruit-bearing trees on either side of the road as soon as the roadwork is over.

Heavy traffic

Traffic congestion on NSB Road is heavy. Riding a vehicle is difficult as and autorickshaw drivers create frequent traffic snarls. They ride deliberately slowly and park their vehicles haphazardly to find customers. Street vendors occupy the road and pavements. Encroachments removed one month ago have returned. The authorities should take immediate action.

Install water meters

The Tiruchrappalli City Corporation has proposed to collect water tax on the basis of size of the property. Mayor A. Jaya has said that most households were less than 500 sq. ft. and a number of households above 2,400 sq. ft. was negligible. But this is applicable only in old areas and the developed areas are having houses more than 500 sq. ft. but less than 2,400 sq. ft. Even though the new tariff will come to effect in 2018, the parameter adopted to calculate the consumption of water is wrong and the size of the property should not matter. It is best to install meters as proposed in 2013.

Stray dog menace

The stray dog menace in Crawford Colony Main Road, and Arockiasamy Pillai Street is assuming alarming proportions. Some 20 dogs pose a stiff challenge to early morning walkers in the area. The residents of Crawford will be pleased, if the corporation initiates measures to check the menace.

M. Nagarajan,

Crawford

The widening of the Dindigul Highway in the Tiruchi city limits stretch by the Highways Department from Karumandapam to RMS Colony and the road leading to K.K. Nagar off the Tiruchi-Madurai National Highway is to be welcomed, but the construction of medians constrict the road space. As many commercial establishments are located on these stretches, vehicles are parked on the roadsides. Moreover, the construction of median paves way for wrong side driving menace on these stretches. Would the highways look into this matter?
