Conversion of the shopping complex into a tourism guest house to utilise the complex which had not been used for the past seven years is expected to be completed within two months.

The Puducherry Tourism Development Corporation, way back in 2007-2008, constructed a shopping complex on the shores of Karaikal. Called Sea Gulls, it comprised 22 shops and was intended to promote commercial activity. Spread over 6,000 square metres, it also housed a restaurant and a bar.

No trader came forward to put up his shop on the shopping complex since its inception and the Puducherry Tourism Development Corporation has decided to re-construct and re-design the shopping complex into suits,” say the sources.

The Corporation’s efforts to convince the traders did not yield any desired results.

Obviously, the corporation took up the work on re-designing the shopping complex into a tourist centre.

Every set of three shopping units is being converted into a two suits. The re-modelling includes special design for VVIPs particularly Lieutenant Governor, Chief Minister and Ministers.

A toilet and bath-room are being additionally constructed to cater to the needs of tourists and pilgrims.

The complex has open space where two more suits would be constructed, according to sources.

The re-designing has been taken up at an estimate of Rs.2 crore sanctioned by the HUDCO.

Each suit has a spiral stair case, with the idea of accommodating children in the ceiling. It has been planned to construct 12 single bed rooms and four suits.
