TNPL: nine arrested for betting

Thazhaiyoothu police have arrested nine persons on a charge of betting during Tamil Nadu Premier League match held at India Cements ground here on Sunday.

Police said the detained youth – Sunil (30), Jairlal (27), Abe (32), Nityanand (37) and Mahesh Sharma (26), all from Rajasthan, Goreth (26) of Haryana, Mohit (42) of Andhra Pradesh, Mohammed (32) of Uttar Pradesh and Babu Jayant (26) of Madhya Pradesh – who entered the ICL grounds after purchasing tickets to witness the match held between Tuti Patriots and Karaikudi Kaalai on Sunday night, started betting among themselves while sitting in the gallery.

“If ₹ 100 is paid with the prediction of ‘four’ in the next ball and the prediction becomes true, the gambler will get ₹ 500 or lose the amount (₹ 100) he paid. When the prediction of ‘sixer’ becomes true, ₹ 1,000 was given. As the police received information from the spectators about this betting, a police team, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Ponnarasu, entered the arena and detained all of them,” sources in the police said.

They were remanded in judicial custody later.
