TNPCB directive to foundry unit

May 30, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST - Tirupur:

Officials of Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) inspected the foundry at Pallagoundenpalayam, against which the people in the area raised allegations of causing pollution early this week, in its surroundings.

TNPCB District Environmental Engineer (Tirupur North) K. Elankumaran told The Hindu on Thursday that based on the findings of the inspection, instructions had been given to the unit to reuse the sand moulds utilised for metal casting in the unit, as far as possible. “Even if the unit owners have to dispose of the sand moulds, they should not anymore dispose them of in open places,” he added.

Mr. Elankumaran said that the said unit has already been asked to set up an ambient air quality station for continuous monitoring of air quality even though the firm had installed an online monitoring system of carbon emission from the chimney of the unit.

Inspection

The inspection was warranted after the people residing in the area alleged that carbon and other dusty wastes coming out of the process to cast metal at the unit while making automobile spare parts, were affecting agricultural activities and health of people in the vicinity.
