T.N. urges Centre to release dues early

Wants job scheme norms relaxed in cyclone-hit areas

A Tamil Nadu government delegation called on Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Union Minister for Rural Development Narendra Singh Tomar in New Delhi on Thursday and raised several issues, including early release of dues for urban and rural local bodies.

The delegation also urged the Centre to relax the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) norms to use manpower for restoration work post cyclone Gaja.

In a memorandum handed over to Mr. Jaitley, Municipal Administration Minister S.P. Velumani urged the Minister to release a sum of ₹560.15 crore, which is due to urban and rural local bodies as performance grant for 2017-18.

The memorandum also urged him to release ₹3,612.05 crore due to urban and rural local bodies in the State as the first instalment of 14th Central Finance Commission basic grant for 2018-19.

Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker M. Thambi Durai and AIADMK MP in the Rajya Sabha R. Vaithilingam were part of the delegation which handed over the memorandum.
