In a move that will help small farmers store their produce when the market price is low, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Sunday ordered to set up 50 grain storage godowns at a cost of Rs 82 crore.

“In order to better protect the produce of small farmers, aid their financial growth, help them sell their produce at a reasonable market price after the harvest and help them relieve themselves from the burden of loans, the government will open 50 grain storage godowns,” an official release said.

These modern godowns will be equipped with weighing equipment, weighing stages and grain moisture testers, it said.

Five godowns with a total capacity of 10,000 tonne with lorry parking facility at a cost of Rs 25 crore each will come up in Erode, Madurai, Thanjavur, Cuddalore and Villupuram districts.

Eight godowns with a total capacity of 5,000 tonne with lorry parking facility at a cost of Rs 20 crore each will come up in Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Coimbatore, Erode and Thanjavur districts.
