T.N. looking at reopening schools for senior classes

Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi

Tamil Nadu Minister for School Education Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi on Tuesday said his department was examining the possibility of reopening schools for students of Classes IX to XII. The development comes against the backdrop of the declining number of daily COVID-19 cases in the State.

“Some States have reopened schools for Class XII students alone, and they have said it is not compulsory for students to come to school. The attendance has been low in such States, and parents are hesitant to send their children to school, citing the possibility of a third wave. We will observe how schools are reopened in other States and discuss the issue with the Chief Minister after which a decision could be taken,” he said.

Schools have remained shut for a majority of the classes since March 2020. For Classes IX to XII, they reopened briefly after this January, but were shut in April during the second wave.

Over 1.35 lakh students have migrated from private schools to government and government-aided schools this year, largely due to the economic impact of the pandemic. Besides, another 68,500-odd students moved from aided schools to government institutions. In the wake of this development, Mr. Poyyamozhi said the Department was considering how authorities could equip schools better to handle the increase in strength. “District-level education officials have been asked to ascertain the needs of schools, and we are looking into the possibility of increasing teacher strength as well,” he added.

Speaking at the Government Boys’ Higher Secondary School in Mogappair after inaugurating a campus greening initiative, he encouraged organisations to join hands with the Department to work with government schools in the State. “On this school’s campus, over 1,000 saplings were planted last year as part of a CSR initiative, and this is now a green campus. There are a lot of areas where organisations could work with government schools, and we want more companies to come forward,” he added.

For Classes IX to XII, they reopened briefly after January this year, but were shut in April during the second wave of the pandemic.
