The State government on Sunday said it was hopeful that Governor Banwarilal Purohit would take a “good” decision regarding the release of the seven life convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

Addressing journalists here, Law Minister C. Ve. Shanmugam said, “The law does not provide for any time limit for the Governor to decide (on the Cabinet’s recommendation to release the convicts). However, we hope the Governor takes a decision within a reasonable [period of] time.”

“After the recent Supreme Court order on Perarivalan’s plea, the government acted within 48 hours and recommended [to the Governor] the release of all the convicts,” he pointed out.
