The district unit of the Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) launched a signature campaign here on Wednesday demanding total prohibition in the State.

As part of the State-wide campaign launched by party leader G.K. Vasan on August 12 to collect one crore signatures, district presidents A. Ravichandra Ramavanni (East) and S.B. Ranganathan (West) launched the campaign at Aranmanai by obtaining signatures from the people.

As the party functionaries distributed pamphlets detailing the party’s commitment to total prohibition, party volunteers carried pads and obtained signatures from the people of all walks of life. “People, especially women, enthusiastically joined the campaign and expressed their solidarity with the party,” Mr. Ramavanni said.

He said that the campaign would continue till October 2, when Mr. Vasan would submit the signatures, along with a memorandum, to Governor K. Rosaiah at Raj Bhavan in Chennai.

He said the party would collect as many signatures as possible by visiting places of worship, markets, malls, cinema houses, educational institutions, bus stands, railway stations and all important places thronged by the public.

Former MLAs K.S.K. Rajendran, K. Hasan Ali, party spokesperson K. Kannan Babu and district vice-president A. Dulbib were among those whodistributed pamphlets.
