Demanding the total prohibition, cadres of Tamil Maanila Congress staged a demonstration at Jawahar Grounds in Palayamkottai on Friday.
Led by former MP S.S. Ramasubbu and former civil servant Lakshmikanthan Bharathi, the cadres raised slogans in support of total prohibition in Tamil Nadu. They urged the State government to impose a ban on liquor sale “as it was ruining thousands of families”.
In their petition submitted at the Collectorate to be forwarded to the State government, the cadres had said the total prohibition that was clamped in 1948 was withdrawn in 1971 by the then Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.
In neighbouring Kanyakumari district, the TMC cadres, led by T.R. Selvam, president of party’s Kanyakumari east district, staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate. MLA John Jacob, former MLA Kumaradoss and others participated.

Many households had fallen victims of alcohol related crimes and domestic violence. It also caused family break-ups and lives of many youths were ruined.
Hence, he appealed to the State government to close down TASMAC shops. The agitation was inaugurated by C.S. Muralitharan, State joint secretary of TMC.
