The overall pass percentage in the Plus Two examinations has dipped in Tiruvannamalai district. After soaring beyond the 90% mark in the last two years, the pass percentage has come down by 3.87 this year.

The district that took a leap from 83.43% in 2015 to 90.67% in 2016 followed by 91.84% last year settled for an overall pass percentage of 87.97 this year.

A total of 28,497 students – 14,866 girls and 13,631 boys – appeared for the examination. Of this, 25,069 students – 13,535 girls and 11,534 boys – passed.

Despite the decline in overall pass percentage, the district maintained its position in the State rankings. As last year, the district stood at the 23rd rank in the State level. Girls fared better than boys by registering a pass percentage of 91.05. Boys registered a pass percentage of 84.62.

Of the total 221 schools, 38 schools achieved centum results. This included one government school. Last year, 43 schools, including seven government schools, achieved centum results.

According to a senior official of the Education Department, 91 out of the total 131 government schools in the district have obtained pass percentages lower than last year. “We have asked the heads of schools to do an analysis of the results and come for a meeting next week. They will have to identity the reasons for the results,” he said.

A subject-wise analysis of results showed lower pass percentages in certain subjects, he said, adding, “We are doing a subject-wise analysis of the results. As of now, we found that Commerce and Accountancy have 85 to 86 pass percentage. Similarly, Chemistry has a pass percentage 91.”

The department has asked teachers to conduct special classes in schools for students, who have failed in the examinations. “This way, they can appear for the instant examination to be held in June and pass so that they can get admission to colleges,” he said.
