Four of a family, including a doctor couple working with the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital, are undergoing treatment at the isolation ward of the hospital with symptoms of swine flu, since Friday night.

“While one of the four patients has tested positive for the H1N1 virus as per the analysis done by a private lab, we are waiting for the blood sample analysis reports of the remaining three. To reconfirm, we have again sent the blood samples of the doctor, who tested positive for swine flu (to King Institute, Chennai). They are stable as we have already started the appropriate line of treatment,” said S.M. Kannan, Dean, Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital.

This is the first instance of H1N1 infection in a southern district this year after two persons succumbed to swine flu in the Nilgiris.

When the fever intensified, his blood samples were sent for analysis that confirmed the presence of H1N1 virus. Without wasting time, Dr. Kalyanakumar went to the TVMCH on Friday night and was put in an isolated ward.

“Since his wife, working with TVMCH, his mother and 91-year-old grandfather were also suffering from fever and cold, they too have been admitted to the TVMCH and are undergoing treatment now,” said a doctor treating them.

Meanwhile, the Public Health officials swung into action by fumigating the houses of Dr. Kalyanakumar and his close relatives, who visited him when he was down with fever.

“Tablets have been given to everyone who visited them. They have been instructed not to go out fort 10 days,” said a senior health official.

Dr. Kannan said the public need not panic as the right line of treatment at the right time would cure the viral infection.

“Our doctors, who are taking care of the patients, are very much experienced in treating infections including swine flu. Those who are suffering from cold and fever should get the right medical advice from the doctors of TVMCH so as to start the appropriate line of treatment,” he said.
