Three ‘padayatris’ run over

Three devotees on a ‘padayatra’ were run over by a speeding car along the Chennai-Tiruchi National Highway in Perambalur district during the early hours of Sunday.

The accident occurred when a group of five devotees, including four women, from Siruvachur in Perambalur were on a ‘padayatra’ to Samayapuram. The police said a speeding car drove into the group, walking by the roadside at Perumalpalayam. R. Kaveri, 48, R. Parameswari, 49, and P. Kalian, 52, died on the spot. M. Marudambal, 55, and M. Solaimmal, 65, were injured.

The driver abandoned the vehicle and escaped, sources said. The Padalur police have registered a case.
