Three drown in Cauvery

Three persons, including a Class X student, drowned in River Cauvery at Kokkarayanpettai near here on Sunday evening.

Police sources said, Yasar Arafath (17), son of Abdul Khader of Pollachi, attended medical college entrance exam in a college in Tiruchengode town on Sunday. He was accompanied by his father Abdul Khader (50), and two other relatives – Umar Barkath (24) and Mohammad Azad (16) to the examination centre.

When they were returning to Pollachi, they took bath in River Cauvery near the Kokkarayanpettai bridge.

Yasar Arafath was said to be washed away in the current.

The other three tried to rescue him one by one and all of them got drowned. One of the passersby rescued Yasar Arafath.

On receiving information, fire service personnel rushed to the spot and retrieved the bodies of Umar Barkath and Mohammad Azad, with the help of local fishermen. Search for the body of Abdul Khader is in progress. The Mousi police have registered a case.
