Two women and a man attempted self-immolation during the weekly grievances redress meeting on the Collectorate premises here on Monday.
Lakshmi (65) and her daughter Vasanthi (46) of Kandampatti submitted a petition to Collector K. Maharabushanam at the meeting hall. The petition said that Vasanthi purchased a house from her brother Murugesan (42). However, Vasanthi’s another brother Kumar (35) demanded that the house be registered in his name. On Sunday, when Vasanthi visited the house, Kumar threatened her. Hence, Lakshmi and Vasanthi sought protection.
They took out bottles filled with kerosene and poured on them in front of the Collector. Policemen on duty prevented their attempt and took them away.
R. Manosuriyan of Karipatti poured kerosene over him near the cycle stand and tried to immolate himself. However, it was prevented by the police.
Inquiries revealed that free house site patta was not given to him for many years. Likewise, Kamaraj (37) of Mohan Nagar came to the Collectorate with bottle filled with kerosene demanding retrieval of land belonging to him. During frisking, the police found the bottle and took him away.
