They didn’t rush to attack, but called the police

Kancheepuram SP lauds residents of Orathi for restraint

The Superintendent of Police, Kancheepuram police district, Santosh Hadimoni, on Friday commended the residents of Orathi for heeding to the plea made by the police not to hurt “strangers” spotted in their area.

“I am indeed pleased with the response from the villagers of Orathi to our call. Last night, they spotted a person who could not speak in Tamil, but they informed the Orathi police immediately instead of taking the law into their hands. The person was taken into custody and is being interrogated,” he added.

Call for co-operation

Stressing that overcoming instinctive urges while dealing with public safety was the need of the hour, said child kidnapping could be checked easily if the public joined hands with the law-enforcing machinery.

Decrying the habit of sharing everything that appears on social media, he called upon the people to restrain from such acts and also said that steps had been initiated to identify the persons who had planted a story on social media.

“Efforts are being made by the cyber crime wing and if it is ascertained that such users had indulged in similar mischievous acts in the past or their postings/sharing showed a penchant for mischievous material, they will be dealt with as per law,” he added.

The SP thanked the media for ensuring that the call given by the police reached the people.

As far as the Kancheepuram district was concerned, only three incidents of ‘mistaken identity’ attacks were reported and 11 persons were booked for attacking unknown persons, the SP said.
