‘Terrorism single most serious threat’

“The security situation does not look too promising elsewhere in South Asia. Sri Lanka is embroiled in political ramblings, Maldives has come back to the brink, in Bangaldesh, Shiekh Hasina has scored a spectacular victory, but radical Islamists still pose a threat to Bangladesh and neighbouring countries like India,” said M.K. Narayanan, former National Security Advisor for the Manmohan Singh government, at an event in Chennai on Tuesday.

“To India’s west, new alliances between Saudi Arabia and Israel reflect the growing intimacy against Iran. The Syrian government seems to have re-established its position and the war in Yemen continues...Terrorism is the single most serious threat in the country today,” Mr. Narayanan said.

Several sporadic incidents of terrorist attacks have happened, he said. In 2018, there have been quite a few terror incidents. Terror attacks are by no means abating. In United States, United Kingdom and Europe all have reported terror attacks, he added.

Lt Gen V.R. Raghavan, vice-chancellor of Goa University Prof Varun Sahni and Professor of Journalism, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Dr. Sridhar Krishnaswami, spoke at the conclave.
