Tension in car festival

Tension prevailed during the car festival at Thanthondreeswarar temple in Belur here on Monday, when villagers of Chinnanaickenpatti questioned how the car festival could be conducted without their participation.

The festival began in the presence of P. Saroja, MLA, Vazhapadi DSP Shanmuga Sundaram and officials from the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department. While the temple car was proceeding, villagers of Chinnanaickenpatti came there and said that they had equal rights in pulling the car.

They entered into an altercation and stopped the car. The police and officials held talks with them and said that the temple car was pulled so that the festival was conducted within the auspicious time. After 30 minutes, the car was pulled.
