Teacher sentenced to 10 years jail

A government school teacher was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for abetment to suicide of his pregnant wife, by the Mahila court on Thursday.

The accused K. Arul (43), was married to the victim Thangam alias Tamilmani (27) of Uthangarai in 2008. According to the prosecution, the accused, who was a teacher in Velampatti Higher Secondary School in Kaveripattinam had harassed is wife and subjected her to domestic violence, leading her to commit suicide a year later in September 2009.

The victim Thangam was five months pregnant at that time.

Mahila Court judge Thirumagal, having found the accused Arul guilty under sections 498 A and 306 of IPC, sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs.45,000.
