Tasmac shop closed down

Complaints poured in from public demanding the shifting of the shop

Within a week of the district court issuing notices to the Collector and district manager of Tasmac, officials on Tuesday permanently closed liquor shop number 9269 located near the Central bus stand in Tiruvannamalai.

In the wake of complaints from advocates and public on the disturbance caused by the Tasmac shop, the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) sent notices to the Collector and Tasmac district manager to appear before the authority.

Though Tasmac officials promised to shift the shop, no steps were taken.

Following this, the DLSA, through its secretary and sub-judge K. Rajmohan, filed a civil suit to restrain the conduct of business in the shop. It wanted the shop to be shifted to any other unobjectionable place.

Principal district judge G. Mahizhenthi on March 28 granted an interim injunction restraining the district manager of Tasmac from carrying out business at the liquor shop from March 29 to April 1.

The court also issued notices to the Collector and district manager to appear on April 2.

Mr. Rajmohan said that the Collector appeared through the government pleader, while the district manager of Tasmac appeared in person.

“They admitted to the facts of the case, and assured to close the shop. They sealed the shop on April 3,” he said.

Surprise visit

Mr. Mahizhenthi accompanied by Mr. Rajmohan conducted a surprise visit to the shop at 1.30 p.m. on April 3. “The public thanked us for taking steps to close the shop permanently,” Mr. Rajmohan said.

He added that the principal and correspondent of a private school at Vengikkal have submitted a complaint on another Tasmac shop located 50 metres away from the school.

“This shop is opposite to the Collectorate. The principal said that the students were finding it difficult to cross the shop. One boy was hurt after a liquor bottle was thrown at him. Through DLSA, we have issued notices to the Collector and DM of Tasmac,” he said.
