The Congress has been making statements to divert the people’s attention from its failure to resolve the problems of the Tamil Nadu fishermen while in power, and the State government, too, is happy making announcements, BJP State president Tamilisai Soundararajan said on Monday.

Talking to journalists here, she said the five fishermen, awarded the death sentence by a Colombo court, were arrested in 2011. But the then Congress government did not take any measure to secure their release. Now, the BJP government was trying to free them.

The AIADMK government was happy making announcements and offering Rs.20 lakh to conduct the case in their defence in Sri Lanka, she said.

The official machinery had been paralysed (after Jayalalithaa was jailed in the assets case), and O. Panneerselvam was afraid of discharging his duties as Chief Minister.

Even his photograph was not displayed in government offices. Law and order had deteriorated.
