The Tamil Nadu Government on Wednesday filed a contempt petition in the Supreme Court against Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah alleging that he had committed contempt of court by taking a defiant stand before the Supervisory Committee that the final award of the Cauvery Tribunal would not be implemented.
The State government in its petition had also cited Water Resources Minister M.B. Patil and Chief Secretary S.V. Ranganath as other contemnors along with the Chief Minister.
Tamil Nadu said “ever since the passing of the interim order and the Final Order was rendered by the Tribunal, and till date there has been no voluntary release of water by Karnataka during the crucial months of June to September and water was released only when it became inevitable for the reason that it could not hold water in its reservoirs.
During the last irrigation year 2012-2013, Karnataka failed to comply with the interim order and did not release the stipulated quantities though it had utilised more than 36.30 tmcft (thousand million cubic feet) during the period February 1, 2012, to May 31, 2012, for the summer irrigation.”
