The prestigious Salzburg Festival of music and drama will begin in Austria on July 25 to the strains of nadaswaram.

In a first, three artists from Tamil Nadu have been invited for the festival. They are nadaswaram player Injikudi E.M. Subramaniam, veena artiste Jayanthi Kumaresh and Bharathanatyam exponent Alarmel Valli. The festival committee had requested R. Nagaswamy, former Director, Tamil Nadu Archaeology Department and founder of Chidambaram Natyanjali festival, to select the artists.

He made the selection in consultation with Y. Prabhu, general secretary, Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, Chennai, and A.S. Ramakrishnan, managing trustee, Madhuradhwani. Dr. Nagaswamy said he suggested nadaswaram in the Tamil tradition for opening the festival.
