Nilakottai Tahsildar Mohan was arrested on charges of demanding and accepting bribe on Friday.
The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption officials said that the Pallapatti Village Administrative Officer had seized a tractor which was used for lifting sand without valid permit, and handed it over to the Nilakottai Tahsildar.
After inquiry, Dindigul Revenue Divisional Officer Uthaman slapped a fine of Rs. 25,000 on tractor owner Madheswaramurthy. As Madheswaramurthy paid the fine amount, the RDO directed the Tahsildar to release the vehicle. But the Mohan allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs. 10,000 from Madheswaramurthy to release the vehicle.
Acting on his complaint, the DVAC officials set a trap and caught Mohan red-handed when he received the cash from the complainant.
Enquiry for 5 hours
They conducted an inquiry with him for more than five hours. Meanwhile, Special Tahsildar Karthikeyan, who assumed office as Nilakottai Tahsildar as per the direction of Collector T.N. Hariharan, released the vehicle on production of the fine receipt.
