All Tamil Nadu birds census for this fiscal is to be conducted on Friday and Saturday (January 30 and 31).
In a statement, J.S. Ambrose, District Forest Officer, Tirunelveli, said the census would be conducted in all birds’ sanctuaries and in the areas identified for bird movements in abundance. In Tirunelveli district, ‘bird abundance monitoring’ has been carried out in 10 different waterbodies all over the district like Nainarkulam, Vaagaikulam, Koonthankulam, Rajavallipuram, Silayam, Vijayanarayanam, Pirancheri, Thirumalapuram, Thuththikulam and in and around Koonthankulam sanctuary.
Hence bird census will be conducted in these places.
“The district has been blessed with good rainfall this year and hence all the tanks are brimming with water. Due to this, a lot of water birds have arrived at Koonthankulam sanctuary and the adjoining areas. Painted Storks have started building nests at Koonthankulam where there was no nesting in the past two years. Hence, the census will bring out interesting facts this year,” he said.
