The Madras High Court on Monday sought the State government’s stand on a public interest litigation petition that called for action against those who allegedly misappropriated crores of rupees meant for paying scholarship to SC/ST students.

A Division Bench of Justices M. Sathyanarayanan and P. Rajamanickam directed Government Pleader (in-charge) Jayaprakash Narayan to get instructions from the Adi Dravidar Welfare Secretary by December 10 to the PIL petition filed by advocate K. Karthikeyan of Nagapattinam district.

Falsified records

According to the petitioner, officials had been swindling money through falsification of records of students who had obtained seats under government quota as those who were admitted under management quota and by naming ineligible candidates as beneficiaries of scholarships provided to first generation graduates.

He said that the alleged misappropriation was revealed in an internal audit.
